Shallow Relief and Saturation

A first exploration of low relief, precision painting and highly saturated colour.

Made in June 2006, this was my first exploration of low relief and a study in colour. The approach was precise rather than organic, with controlled painting bringing highly saturated colour to the geometric surface. The result is a distinctly contemporary relief.

Shallow Relief and Saturation - facet detail
MORNINGMIDDAYNIGHT
MORNING · LOW RAKING LIGHT

Long shadows, maximum separation between facets. The geometry at its sharpest.

MIDDAY · OVERHEAD

Shadows collapse. Colour takes over and the surface reads closer to painting.

NIGHT · WARM DOWNLIGHT

Ridges catch, valleys drop away. The piece reads heavier, closer to sculpture.
